An Amsterdam court has ruled that the Roman Catholic Don Bosco College in Volendam is within its rights to ban one of its students from wearing a headscarf.Imane Mahssan took the school to court after it ordered her to stop wearing a headscarf. The court sided with the school.
It ruled that Catholic institutions can generally make their own decisions in matters of religion, as long as they are consistent. The Muslim student knew beforehand that Don Bosco College was a Catholic school and should have realized that wearing a headscarf would cause problems.
The Dutch Equality Commission earlier ruled that such a ban constituted discrimination, while a magistrate in Haarlem disagreed. The Amsterdam court has now confirmed the lower court’s judgment.
