Telegraph melder:

The cartoon character, which is broadcast on commercial television, had been due to appear at a party election event on Tuesday highlighting Labour’s policy on families.

A life-size character was due to appear with Yvette Cooper, the Work and Pensions Secretary and Tess Jowell, the Cabinet Office minister, at a Sure Start children’s centre in south London.

But channel Five, the broadcaster which airs the series and the programme makers, admitted they knew nothing about the event and the show’s distributor, E1 Entertainment, said Peppa Pig would now not be appearing.

In the past, the pig has previously helped to promote the government-funded scheme.

In a statement, organisers said they would withdraw the character from the event to avoid any “misunderstanding”, the BBC reported.

«Peppa Pig is a well known fan of Sure Start children’s centres but, in the interests of avoiding any controversy or misunderstanding, we have agreed she should not attend,” they said.

Labour had previously said it was “delighted” that the pig had accepted the party’s invitation to join the senior ministers.

A spokesman for the Labour party was unavailable for comment early on Tuesday.

Peppa Pig is a British cartoon aimed at children aged 2 and up which follows the life of 5 year-old Peppa and her friends, including Suzy Sheep and Rebecca Rabbit.

The show, which is aired in 180 countries, won a children’s Bafta in 2005 for best pre-school animation.

Its licensors earlier this month announced it had grossed more than £100m in spin off sales after it toppled Winnie the Pooh and Noddy, to become the fastest selling pre-school children’s character in Britain.
